Post Pals – Post a smile on a sick child’s face
by Julian Gratton
Last night I caught the back end of Russell Howard’s BBC show ‘Good News’ where after some quite amusing attempts at humor, he introduced viewers of his show to Post Pals. After watching a short film he showed at the end of the show, I thought that as well as posting something to one of the children on the site, I’d also write a ‘We Like’ article about it in the hope that someone reading this might also be compelled to ‘post a smile on a sick child’s face’.
Post Pals is the brainchild of Vikki, who for the past seven years has been bed bound with severe ME. Like so many people with chronic illnesses all her friends lost touch and she became isolated. When she first became bed bound she was sent many cards which soon became her reason to wake up every day.
It was this that gave her the idea for Post Pals, which she runs from her bed with her laptop. She wanted lots of other seriously ill children to also get the wonderful feeling of waking up in the morning to lots of well-wishing cards and presents. Since being started the website has become a huge success and has meant that many sick children from around the world have had their days brightened thanks to those who visit Post Pals.
A quick look on Post Pals presents you with lots of reasons to make an effort and post a smile to a sick child. Especially when you take a look at the gallery and see the joy that has been brought to children who really have been given the short straw. Children like Ben who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia on March 15th 2007, or Mollie who was diagnosed with Foetal Warfarin Syndrome at her 20-week scan.
The real heart-breaking section of Post Pals has to be in the updates where so many children have passed away because of their conditions. I guess it’s just nice to know that because they were on Post Pals they had some smiles on their faces almost every day despite the difficulties in their lives.
So if you have a spare couple of minutes… do something good today and put a smile on a sick child’s face.
