My holiday from heaven
by Joseph Reaney
A couple of months ago, I booked a weekend break with cottages4you – one of the UK’s leading holiday property companies and, incidentally, one of my favourite Red C clients (because they let me write copy like this). Just before I was due to go away, it was suggested that I write an account of my holiday cottage experience and post it here on this website. Naturally, I started to panic. What if it was a holiday from hell? What if I turned up to find a glorified tool shed decorated throughout with kitten vomit? Luckily for me, I needn’t have worried. Everything about the place was just about perfect…
From the very beginning, cottages4you makes finding your perfect holiday cottage simple. Although the choice is immense (over 10,000 places in Britain alone) you can easily narrow down your search by location, start date, number of beds needed and more. There’s even a tick box to only display properties that have a pub nearby! When I found places I liked the look of I glanced through a few of the images, took a quick virtual tour, read up about the facilities and then checked the available dates. Within five minutes I’d chosen and booked a weekend in the Peak District for myself and two friends. Simple!
So how was the cottage? Well, we turned up on Friday night in the pouring rain and with far more food shopping than was strictly consumable, retrieved the key from the agreed place (an outdoor safe!) and let ourselves in. I was instantly relieved as we walked into the immaculate kitchen, complete with complimentary bananas, and spotted a dishwasher. See, I don’t wash up – not on holiday. After a quick cuppa, I proceeded to have a poke about the place. I discovered a decent sized bathroom with a power shower, a huge bedroom with cuddly toys and a makeup table, and an enormous lounge and dining room with an open fireplace, three sofas and an eclectic assortment of VHS tapes (from the BBC production of Middlemarch to Stallone death fest Rambo). What more could we possibly desire?
But the best thing of all had to be the location. We were in a tiny village bang in the middle of the sublimely beautiful Peak District,
with stunning views of green hills from every room in the house. Consequently, this meant fantastic walking opportunities in every possible direction. We could venture right for the picture-postcard peaks of the Hope Valley, head left for the honeypot village of Castleton or go straight ahead for the tasty carvery of The Bull’s Head. “This”, I thought, “is a holiday from heaven”.
All in all, I was very satisfied. We couldn’t have asked for a better location – or a better cottage – and I would recommend both to my friends and family without a moment’s hesitation. After all, when you’ve spent a long day walking o’er the hill and o’er the vale, what better than to return home to a roaring open fire, a slowly-cooking Irish stew and a slightly jumpy version of Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.
It’s what a weekend in a holiday cottage is all about.
