Avatar and the future of 3D
by Katie Atkinson
When I looked at this We Like section of our website, I was surprised to see that no one in the agency had written an article about what is, in my opinion, one of the greatest films ever made. Therefore, I’ve decided to give Avatar the Red C recognition it deserves…
Avatar has completely dominated the box office over the last couple of months and has now officially become the highest-grossing film of all time, making more than £1.15bn in ticket sales around the world. The only film to even come close to this figure is Titanic – also directed by James Cameron. For the minority who haven’t seen this sci-fi epic, Avatar is about humanity’s quest to export a valuable mineral from the distant moon Pandora – and threatening the existence of the Na’vi race in the process. The humans have to create a relationship with the natives and learn about their environment in order to persuade them to move habitat, and leave their valuable resources to them, so they grow Na’vi-human hybrids called avatars, controlled by genetically matched, mentally-linked humans. A soldier who controls an avatar then falls in love with the Na’vi princess – and it’s your typical Hollywood love story!
So what’s all the fuss about?
Avatar seems to be a bit like Marmite – you either love it or hate it! I would consider it to be one of the best films I’ve ever seen, and although the storyline was infatuating I was more overcome by the
special effect visuals of the film. Avatar was brilliant at drawing you into the fantasy world. The romance of the film and the relationships formed between the natives and their environment added to the amazing imagination of the filmmakers and the groundbreaking computer graphics. The fact that the wondrously detailed fantasy world Cameron has created is shown in 3D just enhances this. Quite simply, Avatar has become a phenomenon that has captured the world’s attention in a way few could predict.
Is 3D the next big thing?
After the film that has created the biggest craze of all crazes, it looks like the world has gone 3D mad. For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, some of this year’s games will be broadcast in next generation technology 3D. Sky has already announced that they will be launching a 3D satellite channel in the UK next year (although viewers will need a 3D enabled TV) and they’re kick starting the trend this weekend with live Premier League match Arsenal vs. Manchester United available to watch in 3D throughout nine pubs across the UK (in London, Cardiff, Manchester and Edinburgh).
There are also talks of the 2012 Olympics being shown in 3D, and there are plenty more 3D films coming in 2010 too, like Alice in Wonder land, Beauty and the Beast and the new Harry Potter films. Avatar has been a fantastic introduction to the new generation of film making, enhancing the viewers experience in the cinema – and soon in your very own home. Personally, I’m not too bothered about the football, but as a big film-o-holic, I cannot wait to see the up and coming films…. especially Harry Potter. Roll on November!
