Olympic Dreams by James Dodd

by Nick Cliffe

Olympic Dreams Book Cover by James Dodd

Having realised that most of my ‘we like’ articles are about photography, I started work on a lovely little article about illustration. But that all came to a stop as soon as I saw ‘Olympic Dreams’ – a beautiful series of photographs by James Dodd – that I just had to write about. So it’s photography again!

When I first saw them, these beautiful black and white shots really stopped me in my tracks. I’m now kicking myself that I missed the exhibition in Sheffield late last year. Read more…

An interrobang, a snark and a grawlix… What the @#$%&! are you on about‽

by Katie Shoard

It was Punctuation Day on 24th September which, I’m sure, was observed respectfully by you all.  No doubt you spent the day taking extra special care to ensure all your apostrophes’ were correctly placed… and tempered your use of ellipsis and exclamation marks!!!

This weekend also saw a surprise appearance from the interrobang on Q.I., and, believe it or not, I actually knew both the name and purpose of this peculiar punctuation mark – probably the first and last time I’ll ever know a Q.I. question outright. So after gaining my massive chufty badge, I began digging around the weird and wonderful world of obscure punctuation and uncovered some bizarre characters indeed.

The 2011 Superbowl adverts

by Julian Gratton

The Superbowl XLV Tv AdvertsIt’s regarded as one of the greatest sports events in the world with over 100 million viewers tuning in. Yet despite all the pre-game build up and talk of who will win there are two things that are just as big as the actual game itself… the Superbowl half time show and what will be showing in the advert breaks!

Looking over from this side of the pond it’s hard to understand why Americans are so obsessed with what will be showing in the advert breaks of a sporting event. I mean, no one over here gets obsessed with what will be shown in the advert breaks of the FA Cup!

Red C delivers for Build Center… in a Mini

by Rosemary Walton

When Build Center (one of our clients at Wolseley) called us with an urgent brief to spread the word about their £3 loft insulation plus free delivery promotion, we knew we had a real challenge on our hands. Not only did we have just over a week to develop the campaign and roll it out… they wanted us to deliver something a little out of the ordinary to maximise the impact. Cue one Mini, one woman, 17 rolls of loft insulation, a 56-link chainsaw and a 2 minute viral ad. Read more…

Ghana fantasy coffins

by Jennie Ambrose

Several men in Ghana carry a coffin styled like an aeroplane up some stairsYeah that’s right – fantasy coffins! Now I’m hoping I’m not going to need one soon but when I do pass to the other side I’d like to go in style and these look just the ticket.

On the western coast of Ghana, just outside the capital, Accra, they like to celebrate the life of the deceased as well as mourning their passing. Take the Ga tribe. They send their loved ones off to the next world in a coffin that represents something from their life – a car if they were a driver, a fish if they were a fisherman, even as far as a sewing machine if they were a seamstress!

The behind the scenes picture of the day

by Julian Gratton

Stanley Kubrick takes a picture of himself and a young lady during a break in the Shining. Some guy called Jack gets in the way. When I was seven years old I had an obsession with the movies. At this tender age all I wanted to be was a stunt man and my hero at the time was a guy called Dar Robinson. An unfortunate incident with a wall ended my dreams of becoming a stuntman when I learned two things. One being that falling from a great height really hurts. The second being that at great heights elbows don’t break… they shatter… resulting in several weeks in hospital and elbow replacement surgery (pop by and I’ll show you the scars of this early boyhood adventure).

I still had my passion for the movies, yet as a result of this accident I switched to wanting to become a film director. That dream never materialised but I would not change that for the world as I absolutely love my job and the opportunities it gives me. I’m still a big film buff, though, and no matter how many commercials I see made I am still fascinated by the magic and creativity that happens behind the lens by the people who are making movies and commercials.

Corinne Day, fashion and documentary photographer

by Jennie Ambrose

Corinne Day, Fashion photographer

This is a strange one for the we like section but I’m treating it as more of a celebration of the life and work of photographer, Corinne Day who sadly passed away recently after a long term illness.

Corinne’s unique style introduced us all to a new way of shooting fashion. It’s a more realistic, unposed & edgy feel known as ‘heroin chic’ which to some people was seen to “make heroin addiction seem glamorous and sexy and cool”. And although her style at times was shocking it has changed the way we all look at fashion photography. Helping us to try new styles and inject more personality.

Jan Vormann’s Dispatchwork

by Jennie Ambrose

Lego repairs, Bocchignano, Rome part of Jan Vormann's dispatchworkThe great thing about city breaks is wandering around taking in the different cultures, the history and the amazing architecture (in between shopping of course).

There are some fascinating buildings around the world that have been built with great care and consideration by talented tradesman and have lasted the test of time and Mother Nature but are starting to show their age.

German artist Jan Vormann has spent the last three years traveling the world fixing some of these crumbling walls and monuments. Instead of bricks and mortar, though, he’s used Lego!
