Olympic Dreams Book Cover by James Dodd
Having realised that most of my ‘we like’ articles are about photography, I started work on a lovely little article about illustration. But that all came to a stop as soon as I saw ‘Olympic Dreams’ – a beautiful series of photographs by James Dodd – that I just had to write about. So it’s photography again!
When I first saw them, these beautiful black and white shots really stopped me in my tracks. I’m now kicking myself that I missed the exhibition in Sheffield late last year. Read more…

At the beginning of August I had the pleasure of judging the 23rd SUN Awards (Shot Up North). Showcasing the best photographers north of London is now in it’s 23rd year. The judging took place at Doug Curries studio in Leeds where I meet some great people all with different backgrounds:
Ed Horwich, photographer and organizer of the awards along with Doug. Seamus Ryan – Photographer, Rob Walker – Photographer, Vicky Munro from Brass, Clair Watkin from Comma Ca and Jon Cohen of Fuji Film (non-voting chair and adjudicator) oh and we couldn’t forget Woody the dog.

Arrested Man from Gypsies
I was having a rummage through some of my old art school stuff in the attic and in between the old Rizla’s and crayons I discovered a copy of Josef Koudelka’s ‘Gypsies’ complete with library ticket . Whoops! Gypsies was one of the first photography books i ever saw and it still has the power to mesmerise with it’s raw, poetic images. Leafing through the book again reminded me of why Josef Koudelka is hands down my my favourite photographer.

50+ women would like to have fun with fashion again. That’s what JD Williams discovered when they conducted a research panel with prospects and customers of their That’s My Style brand. So when it came to creating the DRTV ad for the Spring/Summer 2011 collection, making customers feel confident with fashion again was something they were keen to push.

When Build Center (one of our clients at Wolseley) called us with an urgent brief to spread the word about their £3 loft insulation plus free delivery promotion, we knew we had a real challenge on our hands. Not only did we have just over a week to develop the campaign and roll it out… they wanted us to deliver something a little out of the ordinary to maximise the impact. Cue one Mini, one woman, 17 rolls of loft insulation, a 56-link chainsaw and a 2 minute viral ad. Read more…

When the good people at Hoseasons asked us to come up with ideas for their flagship new TV ad for 2011, I was pretty excited. This was going to be the first time I had ever seen a TV ad all the way through from concept to execution. And to be fair, it didn’t take us long to come up with some ideas.
The main challenge was how to convey the breadth of the Hoseasons proposition in just 30 seconds. We started as most creatives do by asking ourselves a very simple question: just what is it that we’re trying to sell? The answer was more than a little daunting.

This is a strange one for the we like section but I’m treating it as more of a celebration of the life and work of photographer, Corinne Day who sadly passed away recently after a long term illness.
Corinne’s unique style introduced us all to a new way of shooting fashion. It’s a more realistic, unposed & edgy feel known as ‘heroin chic’ which to some people was seen to “make heroin addiction seem glamorous and sexy and cool”. And although her style at times was shocking it has changed the way we all look at fashion photography. Helping us to try new styles and inject more personality.

I consider myself to be pretty lucky. My parents have a home in the South of France that I get to visit at least once every summer. I get to chill in the sun reading a good book, drink lots of local wine and sample the great cuisine. I call it my rehab time.
It takes less than 2 hours for me to get to my parents’ place. Cheap air fares and easy access to flights has made the world feel very small indeed. Yet it always amazes me just how different everything feels when I get there. Not least in terms of the advertising. Read more…

Financial Services… sounds dull doesn’t it! Ask the average person on the street what that phrase means to them and the ones that stay awake will struggle for a definition. The trouble with ‘Financial Services’ is that it’s a corporate phrase that has found its way into consumer facing communications.
In the struggle to unite the benefits of credit cards, loans, investments and insurance under one umbrella term, a phrase has been created that means nothing to the consumer. Customers of course, use ‘money’ to buy cars, clothes and holidays, they save and invest ‘money’ and protect the ‘money’ tied up in their belongings with insurance. So when we were asked to rebrand the ‘Financial Services’ section of our client’s retail website, we knew just how to help it resonate with consumers.
