An alien encounter of the triggered email kind…

by Katie Shoard

The truth is out there

At Red C, as well as juggling our busy schedules, we have a number of Creative team projects and initiatives that bubble along throughout the year. These include filming and editing video case studies to researching search engine optimisation. This time around, our team got the tricky task of generating new business opportunities with our current clients.

Finding new business avenues for clients sounds easy, but there are lots of things you need to consider. Identifying potential oportunities requires a deep understanding of a brand and the directions in which it could and would want to expand. And that’s just for starters. On top of that, it has to be financially viable, fit in with wider brand and marketing strategies and be measurable in terms of return on investment.

The persuasive power of stealth marketing

by Julian Gratton

The Rolls Royce Phantom makes an appearance in St. Tropez as part of a stealth marketing campaign. From Red C Advertising Agency, Online Marketing Agency, PPC Agency and Direct Marketing Agency Blog article on Stealth MarketingSeveral years ago my art director and I devised a campaign for Rolls Royce that we called ‘whispers’. The campaign was created in reaction to the belief within BMW Innovations (which ran the marketing for Rolls Royce) that Rolls Royce did not need to advertise due to the prestige nature of the brand.

Our ‘whispers’ campaign went like this. We had a new Rolls Royce Phantom that would basically be seen in all the right places. From Yacht Clubs in the South of France, to events around the world held at prestigious places where only the very A-list people would be seen.

A couple made-up of an older gentleman (think George Clooney look-alike) and his younger gorgeous model-like wife, would pull up for lunch at a Yacht Club or attend a party. They would be allowed to leave their Rolls Royce Phantom outside the front entrance or in the near vicinity… before walking into the party, enjoying themselves and then driving home.

How Social Media is bringing fashion to the masses at London Fashion Week

by Julian Gratton

Last year, like many brands and organisations, London Fashion Week flirted with Social Media by having event details, links to stories and comments posted on Twitter and Facebook… so far so very 2009!

This year, though, sees London Fashion Week take a great leap forward by embracing even more Social Media technologies and making London Fashion Week open to the masses rather than the privileged few… and they’ve done it in some predictable and also some surprising ways.

Shirley Polykoff: Copy that coloured a nation

by Katie Shoard

Shirley Polykoff an advertising agency and copywriting legend

Shirley - Bottle blonde and proud of it

Shirley Polykoff is a legendary advertising personality whose copy revolutionised both the fortunes of Clairol and the lives of women in 1950s America.

A ballsy girl from Brooklyn, Shirley battled her way up the ranks at Foote, Cone & Belding agency from the position of junior copywriter to vice president and creative director, to finally, inductee of the Advertising Hall of Fame. On her way up, this flamboyant and brilliant woman gained a reputation as ‘a dynamo in selling and advertising’, with her copy for Clairol hair dye famous not only for its explosive cultural and commercial impact but also for persuading David Hockney to go blonde.

The making of our cottages4you TV Ad

by Julian Gratton

I love it when a plan comes together

I love it when a plan comes together

It was that great leader of men Hannibal Smith who once said… “I love it when a plan comes together”. And that sums up perfectly how I feel about our TV advert for the holiday cottages brand cottages4you. It took  a large number of talented people to create the 40 seconds of film that is embedded within this posting… and to give you an insight into how we ended up with the advert we did… I thought I’d tell you the story of the commercial’s creation.

From the original client briefing to some insights into the creative process and the ideas we presented you’ll hopefully see what went in to creating the final concept that went before the cameras. I’ll then look at the filming process as well as the work that went into the post-production and resulted in the final commercial… which is hopefully enticing people up and down the country to book a break with cottages4you.

Why being naturally curious about everything is the key to creative success

by Julian Gratton

Cheese, jam and Nice 'n' Spicy Nik Naks Sandwiches are a great way to start to be naturally curious to make yourself a better Creative and a naturally curious personEver had a cheese, jam and Nice ‘n’ Spicy Nik Naks sandwich? Sounds disgusting? How do you know if you’ve not tasted it? I mean you like cheese don’t you? You like jam don’t you? And everyone loves Nice ‘n’ Spicy Nik Naks… so what’s the problem! Are you not curious as to what it might taste like?

Being curious about everything is essential if you want to be anything better than just a good Creative. Back when I was 17 I loved cheese, jam and Nice ‘n’ Spicy Nik Naks sandwiches… I also read an Encyclopedia from cover to cover and in my early twenties I happily listened as my best friend (who’s an incredibly bright bloke) explained Cosmology to me… all because one day I knew this stuff would be useful.

Could Augmented Reality be the ‘next big thing’ for advertisers in 2010?

by Julian Gratton

Just one example of how Augmented Reality can be used from Red C Marketing, Advertising, Design and Online Advertising Agency Blog postingImagine walking down any street and holding up your iPhone… what you see on the screen is a view of the street yet there are lots of Zombies running towards you that you then have to shoot. Or imagine walking up to a wall and touching it… just for the wall to then display the view that is on the other side of it…. This is the world of Augmented Reality and it’s a world that looks like it’s going to be very big indeed.

Put simply, Augmented Reality blurs the line between what’s real and what’s computer-generated by enhancing what we see, hear, feel and smell. It adds graphics, sounds, and smell to our world… and through a normal pair of glasses or display screen, informative graphics appear in your field of view, and audio coincides with whatever you see. These enhancements are then refreshed continually to reflect the movements of your head and the world around you.

In great copywriting company

by Katie Shoard

Salman Rushdie in 1989... an award-winning advertising agency copywriter

Salman Rushdie in 1989

What do John Milton, Salman Rusdie and Frank Zappa have in common? They’ve all written adverts.

Yep. It might come as a surprise to the purists amongst you, but there’s a whole raft of notable novelists, poets, scriptwriters and lyricists who cut their literary teeth as copywriters. So what could advertising have offered these talented writers, aside from a steady income?

There is a theory that John Milton, author of the epic poem, Paradise Lost, was also the writer of the first ever trade advertisement to appear in the UK press. In September 1658 in Mercurius Politicus, the progovernment newsbook of which he was editor from 1650, there was an advertisement for a ‘China Drink’ with purported health properties:

Could storing your brain free you up to be more creative?

by Julian Gratton

Phrenology illustrationAs I get older I’m finding my memory is starting to let me down. I rack my brain for hours on end, trying to remember things I used to be able to recall in a moment. It’s got to the point where I need to carry some form of notation equipment around with me everywhere… either a notepad and pen or my trusty iPhone for typing notes or recording voice memos.

Having lots of life experiences and memories is essential to becoming a great Creative. In my working life I have used memories from my childhood in adverts as well as experiences told to me by friends or colleagues in copy I have written or ideas I have concepted. Trouble is, as you get older the more you have to remember. And the more you have to remember, the more you find your brain lets you down.

MoSoSo explained and how Advertisers are going to exploit it

by Julian Gratton

p11aSo, there you are having a little shopping trip in town by yourself when all of a sudden your phone bleeps! Instead of a text message or a voicemail or even a new email… this bleep is a notification of a different kind.

It’s a friend who has been alerted by their MoSoSo App that you’re in the vivcinity and they suggest meeting for a drink. Or they may not be in the area, but they have checked their MoSoSo app and seen where you are, so suggest you take a look in a certain shop. Sound scary? Well this is just one of the ways MoSoSo Apps are being used by people…
