Fantabulosa! The hidden charms of Polari

by Katie Shoard

Well hello ducky, how bona to varda your dolly old eek!

Don’t worry, I’ve not been overdoing the sweeties again…

Believe it or not, I’m actually paying you a compliment. The phrase is Polari, a secret language invented by the British gay community in the early 20th century – back in the dark old days when homosexuality was illegal.

Never heard of it? Poppycock! If you’ve ever described something as ‘naff’ or ‘manky’, put on some ‘slap’ before a night out, or popped to your local for a few ‘bevvies’, then you’re practically fluent darling!

The Swinton Mystery Tipper: Winning entry form for the IPA Effectiveness Awards

by Adrian Rowe

Our award winning Swinton Mystery Tipper created by Red C Direct Marketing Agency, Advertising Agency and Online Marketing AgencyWe’re extremely proud of our work on the Swinton Mystery Tipper, especially as it has garnered the agency an armful of awards from two DMA Awards to two ISP Awards and two IPA Effectiveness Awards. We’ve had quite a few people ask to see our winning entry form… so here it is!

CONTEXT AND MARKET BACKGROUND

The insurance sector is a complex and increasingly challenging marketplace. For most of us, insurance has always been a distress purchase – something we grudgingly concede we need to have, and resent the increasing premiums. Three key innovations in the last decade have had a significant impact on the broader market. The launch of Direct Line’s online insurance offer, in 1999, following the formula of its breakthrough approach to offering insurance by telephone a decade earlier, forced every insurer and broker to reassess their approach – here was a company that made buying insurance simple and fuss-free, cutting out the middle man and talking everyday language. This sparked an extended period of discounting in the sector that still has ramifications today.

The music of Matthew Herbert

by Stuart Clark

Matthew Herbert as liked by Red C's Copywriter Stuart Clark from Red C Marketing, Advertising, Direct Marketing Agency We Like Posting

In no way strange.

Studio music policy. Now there’s a touchy subject. When Julian, our Creative Director, isn’t insisting on a start-to-finish playback of the Grease soundtrack, there’s Studio Manager Dawn requesting Energy 98’s hands-in-the-air euro-trance cheesefest. It’s enough to drive you insane. Or in my case, put some headphones on.

I like listening to music when I write, but it has to be the right kind. When you write, you should be listening to the words in your head as they hit the page. So any particularly vocal tunes are distracting. That means hip-hop’s a no-no, Olivia Newton-John is out and Energy 98 should be locked in a soundproofed room…full of vipers.

Matthew Herbert on the other hand is just right – light and sinuous, deep house grooves with hushed rhythms and jazzy melodies. He’s pretty cool, I’d recommend him.

He’s an interesting guy too…

It’s a good job we have Bupa. Creative: 15 – Account Handling: 11

by Julian Gratton

It should have been a yellow card... infuritaed with being beaten again by Red C Marketing's Creative Department... Account handling take to foulingThe history of football is littered with bruising encounters… AC Milan v Internazionale, Ayax v Feyenoord, Bradford v Leeds and now Creative v Account Handling. Despite the incidents on the pitch, though, it was Creative who walked off victorious yet again, having shot 15 glorious goals past their suited counterparts.

The game started off at a blistering pace and it was obvious from the kick-off that Account Handling were going for the jugular, and it was indeed the suited ones who drew first blood with an early goal that rocked Creative… who again were wearing their all black strip… but like footballing Ninjas we hustled, tackled and fired ourselves into a 6-2 lead.
