Commercial Director: Phil Taylor

by Julian Gratton

The darts player Phil Taylor, not the Commercial Director Phil Taylor who recently shot a TV Advert for Cottages4you on behalf of Red C Marketing, Advertising Agency and Direct Marketing AgencyBefore we go any further… no… the 14 times World Darts Champion is not moonlighting as a Commercials Director… the Phil Taylor we’re talking about is far taller, skinnier and has considerably less hair! Phil recently finished filming a new advert for us for Cottages4you… an ad that everyone here at Red C is incredibly proud of and was brought to life by both Phil and Sharon Gunnel, the Producer at Velvet.

Our first introduction to Phil was through his reel which immediately grabbed us for his clever subtle use of humour and ability to capture some lovely moments on films as well as getting some memorable performances from his actors. On meeting him I was instantly sold by his passion for both our concept and his desire to stay true to my original idea and deliver an advert that had high production values and quite simply and beautifully converted a singular message in a memorable way.

The making of our cottages4you TV Ad

by Julian Gratton

I love it when a plan comes together

I love it when a plan comes together

It was that great leader of men Hannibal Smith who once said… “I love it when a plan comes together”. And that sums up perfectly how I feel about our TV advert for the holiday cottages brand cottages4you. It took  a large number of talented people to create the 40 seconds of film that is embedded within this posting… and to give you an insight into how we ended up with the advert we did… I thought I’d tell you the story of the commercial’s creation.

From the original client briefing to some insights into the creative process and the ideas we presented you’ll hopefully see what went in to creating the final concept that went before the cameras. I’ll then look at the filming process as well as the work that went into the post-production and resulted in the final commercial… which is hopefully enticing people up and down the country to book a break with cottages4you.

Cinematographer: Trevor Forrest

by Julian Gratton

Cinematographer Trevor Forrest hard at work preparing to shoot the cottage scene for the Cottages4you TV CommercialAt Red C we love working with talented and passionate individuals, which is why we thoroughly enjoyed working recently with Trevor Forrest… who was the Cinematographer on our recent commercial for Cottages4you and also qualifies for the status of ‘bloody nice bloke’.

The Director of the commercial, Phil Taylor, told me how he had wanted to work with Trevor for a long time… and having worked with him on this project I can see why. The consummate professional at all times, Trevor worked his socks off to ensure the shot that was captured on camera was as lush and inviting as it could be… which has led to a great looking commercial.

Yule just love the Red C Christmas card

by Jennie Ambrose

Red C Direct Marketing Agency and Advertising Agency's Christmas Card illustrated by Linzie HunterYep, it’s that time of year again where the whole agency get into the festive spirit and have a go at coming up with new ideas for the agency Christmas card! This year’s challenge certainly caused a stir with an extra sprinkling of motivation coming from the special prize of a brand spanking new iPod Nano for the winner. So everyone quickly huddled in their groups making sure their ideas weren’t over heard – we’re not competitive – honest.

And this year’s winner is… drum roll… Mrs Katie Shoard! Our Senior Copywriter.

The judges had a hard time choosing the winner but decided to go with Katie’s copy-based route that uses a quirky, colourful illustrative design that pokes fun at Christmas clichés and conveys Red C’s fresh approach.

Billygean’s blog: hooray for the humdrum

by Joseph Reaney

blogI have a love-hate relationship with blogs. There are several I enjoy – travel blog Going Local is an absolute delight, for example, and James and The Blue Cat is consistently chucklesome – but there are many more that incense me. Like spite-filled celeb rumour mill Perez Hilton, an ever-present reminder of humankind’s inexorable retreat into idiocy. Though it’s the ‘personal diaries’ that have traditionally acquired the majority of my goat.

“Come on”, I thought. “Wake up and smell the narcissism. How can you be so arrogant as to expect total strangers to give a flying fig about the mundane happenings of your mundane life? It’s the 21st century equivalent of popping round the neighbours’ to show off snaps from your latest break in Bognor.”

So when an old friend of mine started her own online diary in 2006, I was predictably blasé. I took a courteous glance but quickly dismissed it. Then, at the end of 2007, events conspired to turn her world upside down. Her blog took on another dimension, reporting every twist and turn of a tumultuous life. Before I knew it I was captivated – and I have been ever since. Over the last 24 months, her blog has changed my opinion of personal diaries forever… Read more…

Retoucher: Ann Mulqueeney

by Julian Gratton

The Swinton Biker's Champion, shot by Tracey Gibbs and retouched by Ann Mulqueeney on behalf of Red C Marketing, Advertising and DesignI first got introduced to retoucher Ann Mulqueeney by my old Art Director and Creative Partner Simon Rowlands… and ever since I met her I have been constantly amazed by both her abilities as a retoucher and what a wonderful positive person she is… in fact I can safely say that she is someone who goes above and beyond for you every time to deliver truly stunning results.

Whether she is tidying up a fashion shot, smoothing down fabric and ironing out crows feet on a model’s face or undertaking something far more complex that could involve her having to combine up to 20 separate shots to create one stunning visual… Ann’s ‘can do’ attitude means even the most time consuming job is not a chore.

Urusen: Now that she has flown

by Julian Gratton

The cover for the Urusen track 'Now that she has flown' which provides the soundtrack to the Red C TV Commercial for Cottages4youAnyone who has ever visited the Creative Department at Red C will know that we love our music… and there’s nothing more we like than discovering some new sounds to tap our little feet to during the working day… that is until Dawn makes our ears bleed by putting on some awful rave radio station like Energy 98.

The band Urusen have just supplied the music for our recent TV Commercial for Cottages4you, and as well as the track ‘Now that she has flown’, that features in the advert… they have some other great tunes as well… which is why we thought we’d do a little piece about that as we also quite like listening to them to help our creativity.

This week’s book in reception: Common Sense by Martin Parr

by Julian Gratton

Martin Parr's Common Sense is this week's Red C's book in receptionAlong with giving me an addiction to Fig Rolls and introducing me to the music of Mr Scruff I also credit my old Art Director, Simon Rowlands, with introducing me to the photographic work of Martin Parr about 6 years ago… and ever since then I’ve been a fan of his unique views of both Britain and the world in which we live.

Internationally recognised as a brilliant satirist of contemporary life, Martin Parr has led the development of the British documentary tradition with wit, style, and intelligence in a career that boasts numerous publications and exhibitions. His work is held by major galleries and museums worldwide. ‘Common Sense’, which this week graces our reception area, combines extravagantly lurid and luscious colour with Parr’s trademark sense of irony. Though hilariously funny – as always with Parr’s work – there is a sharp and biting edge to the humour.

Why being naturally curious about everything is the key to creative success

by Julian Gratton

Cheese, jam and Nice 'n' Spicy Nik Naks Sandwiches are a great way to start to be naturally curious to make yourself a better Creative and a naturally curious personEver had a cheese, jam and Nice ‘n’ Spicy Nik Naks sandwich? Sounds disgusting? How do you know if you’ve not tasted it? I mean you like cheese don’t you? You like jam don’t you? And everyone loves Nice ‘n’ Spicy Nik Naks… so what’s the problem! Are you not curious as to what it might taste like?

Being curious about everything is essential if you want to be anything better than just a good Creative. Back when I was 17 I loved cheese, jam and Nice ‘n’ Spicy Nik Naks sandwiches… I also read an Encyclopedia from cover to cover and in my early twenties I happily listened as my best friend (who’s an incredibly bright bloke) explained Cosmology to me… all because one day I knew this stuff would be useful.
