Commissioning one of the UK’s best illustrators to create imagery for my DM pack!

by Leigh Whitnall

Freemans Direct Mail pack illustrated by Gary Newman for Red C, direct marketing and advertising agencyWhen Julian asked me to give Gary Numan a call about some illustrations, I was unimpressed. Partly because I’m often the butt of the practical jokes round here, and partly because I’m more of an Ultravox man myself.  So it was with some apprehension that I went back to my desk to make the call. As I dialled I decided I’d play it safe: skip the musical chit-chat and get straight down to business, which turned out to be a wise move when illustrator Gary Newman – and not the King of synthpop – answered the phone.

A pioneer of doom-laden electronic music he may not be, but Gary Newman is one of the UK’s top illustrators. His signature style is zesty, hedonistic, jet-setting. Just the kind of thing we were looking for to add some wow-factor to a “WIN YOUR DREAM HOLIDAY” DM pack.

This week’s book in reception: David LaChapelle, Heaven to Hell

by Julian Gratton

The cover of David laChapelle's Heaven & Hell as featured in Red C Marketing, Advertising and Design Agency We Like PostingBack when I got my first job in 1996, my Creative Director gave me a book to look at called ‘LaChapelle Land’ that simply astounded me. Needless to say I hunted down my own first edition numbered copy… and it takes pride of place on my bookcase at home.

‘Heaven to Hell’ is LaChapelle’s third in a trilogy that began with ‘LaChapelle Land’. The images contained within the pages and follow in the same astonishing, color-saturated, and provocative style but this time there is more of a reference to Renaissance, art history, cinema, The Bible, pornography, and the new globalized pop culture… hence the title ‘Heaven to Hell’.

My Mishmash Video Competition Entry

by Nick Cliffe

Picture 34After a few fun, intense days of editing I’ve just uploaded my entry to the Getty Mishmash Music Video Remix Competition. From the moment I heard about this competition I knew I had to enter as it gave me the chance to dabble in two of my favourite things: music and film. There was also the small matter of a shiny new 17″ MacBook Pro with Final Cut Studio installed for the winner. Phwooar. The rules to the competition were delightfully simple: make a music video using Getty footage and music. Er that’s it. After whiling away a few hours sampling the delights of the Getty film footage catalog and music collection an idea began to taken shape. You can see my video ‘The Devil & Mr Jones’ here. I’m excited about the result although i’m up against some stiff competition from those pesky professional film directors/editors.  Feel free to post ego massaging comments after you’ve viewed it. Thanks.

Uplifted by Up

by Stuart Clark

Pixar's latest movie: Up is loved by Red C Marketing and Advertising's Copywriter Stuart ClarkHave Pixar ever made a bad movie? I don’t think so. Couple of average ones (Cars, A Bug’s Life) perhaps, but no real duffers. In fact, I reckon pretty much all of their output is undeniably outstanding. And 22 Academy Awards, 4 Golden Globes, and 3 Grammys says I’m not the only one. Needles to say I was well up for Up.

What I love about Pixar flicks is the way they transcend generations. On the surface they’re kids films, movies full of wonder, colour and laughter. Yet just below the surface lurk some quite (and sometimes heavy), adult themes. Sibling rivalry in Toy Story; separation and parenthood in Finding Nemo; family dynamics and depression in The Incredibles; abandonment in Toy Story 2. I could go on. Up is no different.

Flat pack furniture and melodrama at Ikea Heights

by Katie Shoard

IKEA Heights as liked by Red C's Senior Advertising Copywriter Katie ShoardWho’d have thought a Swedish furniture shop could provide the ideal location for a gripping melodrama?

I thought it was just somewhere couples went to have arguments.

Ikea Heights is a spoof soap opera filmed entirely at the Burbank store in California without the store’s permission. It’s really well done too. Customers are milling around in the background, busy deliberating whether the BILLY or the FLÄRKE bookcase would better complement their lounge decor… blissfully unaware of the scandal and intrigue unfolding around them.

How the music industry is using brands and advertising to plug the gap left by illegal downloads

by Julian Gratton

illegal-downloading1According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), illegal downloading of music is solely responsible for a 23% decrease in worldwide sales of music CDs between 2000 and 2006. And in 2008, music sales fell from 449.2 million in 2007 to 360.6 million in 2008, according to Nielsen Co.’s SoundScan service.

It will come as no surprise then that people’s attitudes towards illegally downloading music have changed dramatically in the last few years. Researchers in the UK from the Strategic Advisory Board for Intellectual Property (SABIP) found that 1.3m people used one file-sharing network on one weekday, from that they estimated that over one year these downloaders would have free access to material worth £12bn. And there is no sign of attitudes changing towards illegally downloading music.

Is Kooaba the mobile phone app that advertising designers have been waiting for?

by Julian Gratton

Kooaba's logo which could soon become loved by designers everywhere as it will mean no more CTAs on their adverts, direct mail packs, posters and CD coversCall to actions. They are those pesky things that designers hate because the client always wants them bigger… and the designer wants it to be tucked away so the masterpiece he/she has created won’t be ruined by commercialism. But what if the advert itself was the call to action… and by simply taking a picture of the advert you can automatically be connected to a website where you can get more information or call a number where you can give your details and more information.

Sound daft? Well believe it or not those clever people at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology have developed a mobile phone app for iPhone and Android that turns a multitude of items; from DVD and CD covers to Film Posters and Adverts into call to actions… so the design is the response device! Designers rejoice!

This week’s really big book in reception: Helmut Newton, Sumo

by Julian Gratton

Helmut Newton's Sumo is this week's book in reception at Red C Marketing, Advertising and Online Marketing AgencyIt’s not often you purchase a book so big that it comes with its own display stand. Believe it or not the version of Sumo that graces our reception is the mini version… the original release was so big that it came with its own table and broke records for weight, dimensions, and resale price!

I first came across Helmut Newton’s work when I was studying photography and was immediately captivated by his distinctive, seductive and original style. I hunted down images created by him and even had a scrapbook dedicated to images that I had found by him… images that I would try my hardest to emulate.

Under the Skin of Kevin McCloud and his new book Colour Now

by Rosemary Walton

Kevin McCloud’s Colour Now book as loved by Red C Marketing, Advertising and Design Agency's Client Services Director Rosemary WaltonSometimes I have to pinch myself about how lucky I am to do a job that has so many varied and fun aspects to it and get paid for doing them all in the name of Red C’s mantra of ‘getting under the skin’.

Wandering around the Grand Designs Live Show at the NEC last week was one of those times. Once we had negotiated the car park that was as far away from the venue as it was possible to be; the courtesy bus scrum and the entrance and coffee bar scrums I observed as much to my colleague, Rachael.

In my too many to mention years working in marketing I have worked in call centres, on shop floors, in a betting shop  and been out with delivery drivers in their vans all in a days work but this was a teeny bit more glamorous.
